The Ascended
Warning, this page may contain spoilers.
"Ascended" are entities that might be called "Gods" elsewhere, though they function a little differently in the metacosm.
The function of the soul in the metacosm is to experience Creation, encode that data within itself, with the eventual purpose of returning it back to the Creator. This is why, oftentimes, sapients are also known as 'cyclical souls' -- in other words, the souls that repeat the cycle of living in the planes (are reborn) usually due to missing data.
But the data gathered by the souls is not just for the Creator's benefit, it also helps the soul understand not only the Creation but itself as well. In a very real way, it helps the soul to evolve. Various entities can emerge from an evolved soul, but the highest form of evolution is an Ascended.
More specifically, Ascended are individual souls that repeatedly and obsessively pursue one thing. Through their efforts, these souls come to understand their obsession to the utmost -- and represent it into the Creation. When this happens, the Creator will acknowledge that soul's efforts and elevate it to a permanent position as a warden of an aspect of the Creation. While it is true that some Ascended were birthed by the Creator at the beginning, these Ascended were placeholders and the spot of being an Ascended of something was always meant to be earned.
Due to the Creator's balance, 'evil' can never become Ascended, and the 'evil Gods' are false deities.
Underneath the Ascended are an entire microcosm of minor deities that help support the Ascended's role as the lynchpin consciousness to their particular role.
Some Ascended represent physical forces within the metacosm (such as the Weave or Life), and some represent concepts that are spawned by, supported by, or purely exist in, the minds of sapients.
